Supporting Better Sleep in Our Community
Sleep has long been a priority for our community, as highlighted through feedback from app users, project data, and events. To address this crucial issue, Wellbeing Coach Evelyn Howe was commissioned to lead several community projects aimed at understanding and overcoming barriers to restful sleep.
By connecting with residents at local spaces like warm hubs and cosy clubs, Evelyn uncovered the challenges many people face. Bereavement, menopause, anxiety, and stress often disrupt sleep, compounded by poor habits like excessive screen time before bed or even not sleeping in a bed.
Some residents shared heartfelt stories:
“Since I lost my husband, I really miss just having him beside me, so I sleep with my back against the back of the sofa, so I think he is there.”
“I wake up in the middle of the night and spend hours scrolling on my phone. I hate being alone.”
“I just can’t sleep. I find it really hard to doze off. I average about 4 hours a night.”
To support the community, the team piloted a new initiative: a Sound Bath experience at Chase Leisure Centre. This 60-minute guided meditation uses soothing sound waves to help calm the mind and body, working with the brain and nervous system to relax and recharge. The sessions were trialled with teaching and partner staff, who often face high stress levels that disrupt sleep.
The Sound Bath received positive feedback as an innovative way to promote relaxation and tackle the stresses that keep us awake at night.
As we continue working to improve sleep in Cannock Chase, initiatives like these are helping to address the deeper issues behind sleepless nights, empowering residents to find rest and peace.
Keep an eye out for future events and resources through the Cannock Chase Can app—together, we can make restful sleep a reality for all!
