The Elephant in the Room

Feel Well

“All our lives are little books- but they’re not someone else’s complete book. You’re a chapter or a page or a footnote in someone else’s life and they are going to keep writing beautiful chapters when you are gone.”

Simon Boas (Inspirational Aid worker and author of ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Dying’)

The Elephant in the Room is a community exhibition based on a series of workshops with local people on the subject of loss and bereavement.

“The Elephant in the Room” addresses the sensitive topic of death and bereavement, shedding light on the reluctance to openly discuss these profound experiences. Through the creative process, the exhibition aims to challenge the taboo surrounding death, encouraging people to confront their emotions and ideas.

Artworks featured in “The Elephant in the Room” include different interpretations of the subject from children to older adults, all at different life stages. The ‘book’ concept was inspired after artist, Ruth Allen, read about Simon Boas and his inspirational perspective on death. Ruth used the community workshops as a tool to provoke contemplation and initiate meaningful conversations about mortality and the impact of unspoken emotions.

By creating a safe and reflective space for dialogue, “The Elephant in the Room” seeks to create a community where individuals can share their personal stories, express their feelings, and find solace in collective understanding. Through art, this exhibition endeavours to normalise discussions about death and ultimately promote healing, through understanding, managing the process and emotional wellbeing. The project supports the district’s commitment to its Compassionate Communities Charter and was funded by Staffordshire County Council.
